Üniversite Öğrencilerinde Premenstrual Sendrom Günlüğü ile Premenstrual Sendrom Belirtileri Sıklığının Belirlenmesi ve Baş etme Yöntemleri

Year 2022, Volume: 6 Issue: 3, 419 - 430, 30.09.2022

Abstract

Bulgular: Öğrencilerin %51.5’i düzenli adet görürken, %54.1’i ağrılı adet dönemi geçirdiğini, %42.9’u premenstrual sendrom belirtilerini en az ardışık üç adet döneminde ve yaşamını etkileyecek şiddette yaşadıklarını bildirmişlerdir.

Self-Coping Methods and Determination on Premenstrual Syndrome Symptoms Prevalence by Diary of Premenstrual Syndrome in University Students

Year 2022, Volume: 6 Issue: 3, 419 - 430, 30.09.2022

Abstract

Objective: Premenstrual syndrome; is a condition that occurs with the onset of menstruation, which is seen as emotional, physical, and behavioral problems. The aim of this study is to determine the premenstrual syndrome living conditions and the methods of coping with premenstrual syndrome in university students.
Methods: The research was conducted in a cross-sectional research design. The sample selection method was not used in the research, 392 university students staying in a girls' dormitory affiliated with the Credit and Hostels Institution were included in the study. Research data were collected face-to-face through the "Survey Form and Premenstrual Syndrome Diary" between March-July 2019. Data were presented as numbers and percentages and compared with chi-square analysis.
Results: While 51.5% of the students had regular menstruation, 54.1% had a painful menstrual period, and 42.9% reported that they experienced premenstrual syndrome symptoms in at least three consecutive menstrual periods and in severity that would affect their life. In order to cope with premenstrual syndrome symptoms, students; it was determined that they applied to applications such as protection from cold (65.3%), massage (22.4%), taking a warm shower (61.7%), applying hot (53.8%), drinking herbal tea (37%), paying attention to nutritional content (32.9%), using cosmetic products (6.4%). According to the premenstrual syndrome diary; during three cycles, it was determined that the symptoms appeared on the second day at the earliest and on the 10th day at the latest before menstruation.
Conclusion: It was concluded that approximately half of the participants experienced premenstrual syndrome symptoms in the last 3 menstrual periods that would affect their lives, and they often used protection from the cold, warm shower and hot application to cope with premenstrual symptoms. It is important to carry out studies on the management of premenstrual syndrome symptoms, especially in these periods, which start 10 days before menstruation and when premenstrual syndrome symptoms are felt in almost one-third of each cycle and the quality of life is adversely affected.
