Retrospective Evaluation of Mandibular Impacted Third Molar Tooth Positions

Abstract

Background: In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the mandibular impacted third molar tooth positions of individuals living in the Şanlıurfa region.
Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, Panoramic radiographs of 1096 patients (469 women, 627 men) who applied to the Faculty of Dentistry of Harran University for various reasons between 2017 and 2020 were examined. The impaction status of the teeth was evaluated accord-ing to the Winter and Pell-Gregory classification. Along with the patient's age and gender, The rates of impacted teeth, their localization, and the distribution of impaction levels according to gender and age were recorded.
Results: In this study, 2192 mandibular third molar teeth of 1096 patients were examined. When the distribution by gender is examined, 42.79% are male and 57.21% were female. There was a statistically significant relationship between gender and mandibular third molar position (p<0.05). Of the mandibular third molars, 60.81% were vertical, 21.3% mesioangular, 9.03% horizontal, 0.09% distoangular, 0.14% buccolingual. When the mandibular third molar eruption level was examined, it was 61.82% A, 9.76% B, and 20.48% C level. No statistically significant relationship was found between gender and mandibular third molar eruption level (p>0.05).
Conclusions: Mandibular third molars can lead to various complications when impacted. There-fore, the evaluation of the position of these teeth is an important issue.

Mandibular Gömülü Üçüncü Molar Diş Pozisyonlarının Retrospektif Olarak Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmada Şanlıurfa bölgesinde yaşayan bireylerin mandibular gömülü üçüncü molar diş pozisyonlarının değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır.
Materyal-metot: Bu retrospektif çalışmada; 2017 ve 2020 yılları arasında Harran Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi’ne, çeşitli sebeplerle başvuran 1096 hastanın (469 kadın, 627 erkek) panoramik radyografileri incelenmiştir. Dişlerin gömülülük durumu Winter ve Pell- Gregory sınıflandırmasına göre değerlendirilmiştir. Hastanın yaş ve cinsiyeti ile birlikte; dişlerin gömülü kalma oranları, lokalizasyonları, gömülülük seviyelerinin cinsiyete ve yaşa göre dağılımları kaydedilmiştir.
Bulgular: Bu çalışmada 1096 hastanın 2192 tane mandibular üçüncü molar dişi incelenmiştir. Cinsiyete göre dağılım incelendiğinde %42,79’u erkek ve %57,21’i ise kadındır. Cinsiyet ile mandibular üçüncü molar konumu arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı ilişki bulunmaktadır (p<0,05). Mandibular üçüncü molar dişlerin %60,81’i vertikal, %21,3’ü mezioangular, %9,03’ü horizontal, %0,09’u distoanguler, %0,14’ü bukkolingual pozisyonundadır. Mandibular üçüncü molar sürme seviyesi bakımından incelendiğinde ise %61,82 oranında A, %9,76 oranında B, %20,48 oranında C seviyesindedir. Cinsiyet ile mandibular üçüncü molar sürme seviyesi arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı ilişki bulunamamıştır (p>0,05).
Sonuç: Mandibular üçüncü molar dişler gömülü oldukları zaman çeşitli komplikasyonlara yol açabilmektedir. Bu yüzden bu dişlerin konumunun değerlendirilmesi önemli bir konudur.
