Affetme Kavramı ve Hemşirelik

Year 2023, Volume: 8 Issue: 1, 201 - 208, 31.01.2023

Abstract

The Concept of Forgiveness and Nursing

Year 2023, Volume: 8 Issue: 1, 201 - 208, 31.01.2023

Abstract

In recent years, forgiveness has started to be a notable concept in the field of mental health with researches. Understanding and increasing awareness of the concept of forgiveness will enrich nursing initiatives and contribute to the professional development in the nursing field. This study examines the definition of the concept of forgiveness, forgiveness models, the effects of forgiveness on mental health, and its applicability in nursing practices. In the Turkish dictionary, the term "affetme" (forgiveness) is defined as forgiving, allowing someone to leave a task under in their responsibility and tolerating. The word "forgiveness" as an English word is defined as "to stop hating and resenting a person because of a mistake they have done," or "not to punish the person, nor take revenge." Previous studies revealed that both of forgiving and forgiven individuals were seen to improve their mental and physical health, as well as their social bonds. Nurses determine the needs of individuals to care for individuals during their life stages from birth to death and to meet the needs of individuals during this time. This situation provides nurses with a unique position in meeting the forgiveness needs of patients and their relatives who struggle with forgiveness, to be forgiven and unforgiveness. As a result, forgiveness, which is an abstract concept, will only be better understood by practicing it. Since it is helpful for patients, it can be recommended that nurses to gain awareness about forgiveness and to use it as a tool to help process in appropriate situations as part of care.
