Sexual Health In Palliative Care

Abstract

Palliative care involving physical, emotional, social and spiritual aspects focuses on enhancement of quality of life for the patient and relatives. A holistic approach to existing problems is important for nurses and other health personnel on the palliative care team. Sexual health is an important component of palliative care. Sexual health is often adversely affected in palliative patients. Talking about sexuality with patients is irritating for the majority of health professionals. The issue of sexuality is often ignored by health personnel. Judgments and taboos about sexuality held by health personnel may make it difficult to talk about sexuality with patients. However, studies show that many patients need counseling about their sexual life during the palliative care phase. Patient’s sexual health and sexual concerns assessment counseling are part of the health care team’s professional role and holistic care. In this review, it is aimed to discuss the role of sexual health in palliative care and the role and responsibilities of health professionals in ensuring sexual health
