Abstract

Knowledge and Practices of Healthcare Professionals about Involuntary Perioperative Hypothermia

Year 2024, Volume: 7 Issue: 1, 244 - 254, 25.03.2024
https://doi.org/10.38108/ouhcd.1284783

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to determine the level of knowledge of healthcare professionals about inadvertent perioperative hypothermia (IPH) and the frequency of their practices to prevent IPH.
Methods: The study was conducted as a descriptive-cross-sectional study, between 26.01.2023 and 05.03.2023, with 107 healthcare professionals working in the operating room and surgical clinics of a university application and research center. The data were collected with "Descriptive Information Form" and "Applications and Information on Inadvertent Perioperative Hypothermia".
Results: In the study, it was determined that the participants' mean knowledge score about IPH was at a moderate level (8.04±1.65), and there was a significant difference between the mean knowledge score of IPH and gender, job/title, and educational status (p<0.05). It was determined that the majority of healthcare workers monitor pre- and post-operative body temperature to prevent IPH, but the participants implemented intraoperative IPH prevention interventions at very low rates and approximately half of the surgical clinic workers did not know the practices to prevent IPH, especially intraoperative IPH.
Conclusion: To increase the knowledge level of healthcare professionals about IPH, regular training should be given. Checklists should be created for interventions to prevent IPH.
