The Relationship Between Self- Efficacy Perceptions and Occupational Anxiety Levels Among Students of Health Services Vocational Schools

Abstract

Purpose: Students enrolled in health services vocational colleges undergo an educational process based on both theoretical knowledge and clinical application skills. Therefore, determining the relationship between their self-efficacy beliefs, which are an assessment of their own performance, and their professional anxieties arising from concerns about their own performance is important for the development of educational programmes and the support of professional adaptation. This study was conducted to determine the self-efficacy perceptions and occupational anxiety levels of Kırıkkale University Vocational School of Health Services students and the relationship between them. Methods: The sample of this descriptive study consists of 374 students. The data were collected using the “Descriptive Characteristics Form (DCF), General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), and Occupational Anxiety Scale for Associate Degree Students (OASADS).” Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Independent Sample-t, ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis H tests and Spearman Correlation Test . Ethical committee and institutional approval have been obtained for the study. Results: The mean GSES score for students was 63.50±10.84, and the mean OASADS score was 58.57±13.38. Anesthesia students had higher self-efficacy scores than medical secretarial and emergency care students (p=0.001). The anxiety scores of anesthesia and emergency care students were found to be significantly higher than those of the home care department (p=0.005). Female students (p<0.001), those dissatisfied with their education (p=0.002), and those studying in the first aid and emergency care and anesthesia departments exhibited higher levels of occupational anxiety (p=0.005). A negative significant correlation was found between GSES and OASADS (r = -0.213). Conclusion: It was found that students’ general self-efficacy perceptions were high and varied according to the program they studied. It was concluded that the occupational anxiety of the students was at a moderate level; it differed according to gender, program of study, and satisfaction with the education, and as the occupational anxiety levels of the students increased, their general self-efficacy perceptions decreased.
