Effectiveness of a Text MessageBased Educational Support Programme: A Randomised Controlled Trial

Abstract

Abstract Background: Advancements in information and communication technology have led to significant progress in the implementation and experience of mobile learning. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of information provided via text messages within the framework of the "FBasic Principles and Practice in Midwifery course.' knowledge levels. Design: This was a randomized controlled, pretest/posttest trial. Setting: This study was conducted at the Faculty of Health Sciences, State University, Turkey. Participants: There were 61 first-year midwifery undergraduates (intervention group = 30, control group = 31). Methods: The " Pre-test, Post-test Question Form" developed by course instructors was administered before and after the intervention to assess the impact of information notes sent via text messages on students’ knowledge levels. Results: Pre-test scores were similar between the groups (p> 0.05), whereas post-test scores were significantly higher in the intervention group (p<0.05). In the intervention group, post-test scores were higher than pre-test scores, whereas in the control group, pre-test scores were higher than post-test scores. However, the difference was not statistically significant (p> 0.05). The pretest scores for correct and incorrect statements were comparable between the groups (p> 0.05), but the intervention group had significantly higher post-test scores for incorrect statements (p <0.05). Conclusion: The findings shows that education delivered via text messages refreshes knowledge and supports longer retention times, highlighting its potential as an effective complementary method of ealth sciences education.
