The Effect of Concept Mapping– Supported Training on Nursing Students’ Skills in Assessing Toxic Stress in Neonates: A Single-Blind Randomized Controlled Study

Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effect of neonatal toxic stress education given through concept mapping method on the relevant knowledge of nursing students. Methods: This single-blind randomized controlled study was conducted with 109 second-year nursing students (54 in the intervention group and 55 in the control group) between April 22 and May 27, 2024 by using a participant information form and the neonatal toxic stress knowledge test, both prepared by the researchers. The data were analyzed using SPSS 27.0 program. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the scores of Test 1 administered before the training (p>0.05). However, statistically significant differences were found in the scores of Tests 2 and 3 administered after the training (p<0.05). It was determined that Test 2 and 3 scores of students in the intervention group were significantly higher than those in the control group. Furthermore, the Test 2 scores of the students in the control group were significantly higher than both their first and third test scores (p<0.05). Conclusions: It was concluded that concept mapping had a positive effect on the academic performance of nursing students regarding toxic stress in neonates, and it positively influenced the retention of learning.
