The Effect of Pressure Injury Prevention Training on Nurses’ Level of Knowledge

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a pressure injury prevention training program for nurses and to determine its impact on their knowledge levels. Methods: The study was designed with a two-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 214 nurses, including 109 who completed an 8-hour training program organized by the Turkish Intensive Care Nurses Association and 105 nurses in the control group. The training effectiveness was evaluated using the “Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Level Assessment Tool” (PUKAT 2.0). SPSS (Version 27.0.1.0) was used to analyze the data and dependent groups were analyzed with t-test. Results: The post-training knowledge level scores of the nurses in the study group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p< .001). A significant increase was observed in the knowledge level of the nurses who participated in the training program regarding the prevention of pressure injuries. In addition, it was determined that the study group had higher scores in all themes of the scale compared to the control group who did not receive training. Conclusion: The training program for the prevention of pressure injuries significantly increases the knowledge level of nurses. The knowledge level of the nurses who received the training was significantly higher than the control group, indicating that the training programmes were effective in increasing the knowledge level of the nurses. Future research should focus on the permanence of the acquired knowledge and its application in practice.
