Attitudes Toward Artificial Intelligence and E-Health Literacy: A Study Among Nurses

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to examine nurses’ attitudes toward artificial intelligence (AI) and their e-health literacy levels, as well as the relationship between these two variables. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 200 nurses using a snowball sampling method. Data were collected online via a “Nurse Introductory Information Form,” the “General Attitudes to Artificial Intelligence Scale (GAAIS),” and the “E-Health Literacy Scale.” Descriptive statistics, group comparisons, and correlation analyses were performed to evaluate the data. Results: The mean age of participants was 33.37 ± 7.26 years; 72.0% were female, and 60.5% held a bachelor’s degree. Most participants (90.5%) were aware of AI applications, while only 6.0% had received formal training. Nurses generally demonstrated positive attitudes toward AI (mean total score: 65.81 ± 14.77), and e-health literacy was above the scale midpoint (mean score: 32.53 ± 7.21). Positive AI attitudes were higher among younger nurses, those with higher education levels, and those perceiving AI as beneficial for workload reduction and nursing practice. A moderate positive correlation was found between overall AI attitudes and e-health literacy (r=0.496, p<0.001). Conclusions: Nurses showed generally positive attitudes toward AI, which were influenced by age, education, and perceptions of AI’s usefulness. Higher e-health literacy was associated with more favorable AI attitudes, suggesting that educational interventions to improve digital health literacy may enhance nurses’ engagement with AI technologies.
