Quality and Educational Content of Biomimetic Dentistry Videos on YouTube and TikTok: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract

Purpose: The increasing use of social media as a source of health information has raised concerns regarding the quality and reliability of online educational content. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the quality, reliability, and educational content of biomimetic dentistry videos available on YouTube and TikTok. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was performed using videos identified on YouTube and TikTok with the terms “biomimetic dentistry”, “biomimetic restoration”, “minimally invasive dentistry”, and “biomimetic dental”. After applying predefined eligibility criteria, 40 YouTube and 15 TikTok videos were included. Video characteristics and engagement metrics were recorded, and quality and reliability were assessed using the Global Quality Score (GQS), Modified DISCERN instrument, and Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmark criteria. Associations between video characteristics and quality scores were also analyzed. Results: Most videos were uploaded by dental professionals (YouTube: 85.0%; TikTok: 100%). Compared with TikTok videos, YouTube videos were significantly longer and had been available online for a longer period (both p < 0.01). Incontrast, TikTok videos had significantly higher numbers of views (p = 0.03), viewing rates (p < 0.01), likes (p < 0.01), followers (p = 0.04), and total uploaded videos (p = 0.006). No significant differences were observed between platforms regarding Modified DISCERN (p = 0.27), JAMA (p = 0.73), or Global Quality Score (p = 0.27), indicating moderate overall educational quality and reliability. Higher GQS scores were positively associated with user engagement metrics on both platforms. Contraindications and treatment failures were among the least frequently discussed topics, and videos uploaded by commercial companies generally demonstrated lower quality scores. Conclusion: Biomimetic dentistry videos on YouTube and TikTok showed moderate quality and reliability. Greater involvement of dental professionals, academic institutions, and professional organizations may improve the comprehensiveness and quality of online educational content.
