Use of Traditional Treatment Methods, Adverse Clinical Findings, and Treatment Adherence in Patients with Cutaneous Verruca: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract

Purpose: Cryotherapy is one of the most frequently applied and easily accessible standard methods for treating cutaneous verruca in outpatient settings. This study aimed to determine the frequency of traditional and self-applied treatment methods in patients with cutaneous verruca treated with cryotherapy; to examine their relationship with illness perception, sociodemographic characteristics, and folk beliefs; and to evaluate their effects on adverse clinical findings, quality of life, and cryotherapy adherence. Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive study included 100 patients with cutaneous verruca. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected by the investigating physician through face-to-face interviews; the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) was self-completed by the patients. Patients were classified based on self-reported traditional method use post-data collection without prior grouping. Non-parametric tests, chi-square/Fisher tests, and multivariable logistic regression were used for data analysis. Results: Overall, 47% of patients used at least one traditional method. Adverse clinical findings occurred in 68% of traditional method users compared to 25% of non-users (p<0.001). In multivariable analysis, traditional method use (OR=7.14) and multiple clinical type (OR=5.01) were independently associated with a higher prevalence of adverse clinical findings. DLQI scores were significantly higher in patients with adverse clinical findings, traditional method use, social embarrassment, and self-mutilation (all p<0.001). Cryotherapy adherence was markedly lower in traditional method users (49% vs. 92%; p<0.001), representing a factor independently associated with non-adherence (OR=11.05). Conclusion: Traditional methods are common in patients with cutaneous verruca treated with cryotherapy and are associated with adverse clinical findings, impaired quality of life, and non-adherence. Patient education and improving health literacy are essential to prevent these adverse outcomes.
