Retrospective Evaluation of The Urgency of Patients Admitted The Emergency Department By Ambulance

Abstract

Purpose: Retrospective analysis of urgency of pa tients admitted to the emergency department ED by ambulance. Patients and Method: Urgency of child and adult patients brought to ED by ambulance was evaluated according to the 32 International Emergency Parameters List reviewing medical records and the International Classification of Diseases-10 ICD diagnosis codes. Urgency of patients was evaluated regarding age, gender, time of presentation, duration of ED visit, insurance status and hospital admission. Results: 62.3% of 114 ambulance presentations were determined to be urgent. 36.8% of emergency presentations were due to trauma, 16.9% due to infectious, 16.9% due to neurological, 15.4% due to cardiovascular causes. Gender and time of presentation to ED within or outside working hours were not associated with urgency. Urgency did not effect the length of stay in the ED. Conclusion: Urgent patients who were referred to ED by ambulance were more likely to be older, admitted to hospital and self-paying patients.
