Risk of Depression In Hospitalized Elderly Patients At a University Hospital and The Effects of Some Socio Demographic Characteristics

Abstract

Objective: This research has been carried out to determine, the risk of depression and the effects of some socio- demographic characteristics in elderly inpatientsMaterials & Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in medical faculty hospital at the Ondokuz Mayıs University in Samsun between 01 March-30 April 2008. The sample consisted of 154 elderly patients. Datas was collected by use of questionnaire investigating socio-demographical attributes of the elderly and Geriatric Depression scale. Face to face interviewing technique was used. The percentage distribution, Chi-Square analysis have been used for evaluating the data. Results: The mean age of elderly individuals was 69.68±6.81. They were 39.6 % male, and 60.4 % female. In this study, older patients who resided in the hospital were surveyed for depression risk with the Geriatric Depression Scale form GDS . The mean score was 13.46 ± 6.87 and 25.7% of male and 74.3% of female had depression risk
