The Frequency of Rotavirus and Adenovirus In Pediatric Patients With Acute Gastroenteritis
Abstract
Objectives: This study was aimed to determine the frequency of rotavirus and enteric adenovirus gastroenteritis in pediatric patients admitted to our hospital and to evaluate these frequencies according to age, gender and seasonal features.Patients and Methods: A total of 986 fresh stool specimens obtained from 568 male and 418 female children age range: 0-6 years admitted to our hospital during September 2011 and May 2013 due to acute gastro enteritis were studied. Rotavirus and enteric adenovirus antigens were investigated in the samples with the qualitative immunochromatographic test.Results: Viral antigens were detected in 146 14.8% out of 986 specimens, and the positivity rates of rotavirus and adenovirus were 12.4% 122/986 and 1.9% 19/986 , respectively. In 5 0.5% patients both adenovirus and rotavirus positivity was revealed. Viral antigens positivity was detected as 13.5% in male childrens, 16.5% in female childrens. Rotavirus antigen positivity was detected as 9.1% in 0-12 months group n= 350 , 16% in 13-24 months group n= 231 , 21.7% in 25-36 months group n= 106 , 20% in 37-48 months group n= 55 , 13% in 49-60 months group n= 46 , and 6.6% in >60 months group n= 198 . These rates were 1.4%, 0.4%, 6.6%, 1.8%, 2.2% and 2%, respectively for adenovirus positivity. Positive results for rotavirus and adenovirus were simultaneously detected in 0.9% of samples in 0-12 months group n= 350 , 0.4% in 13-24 months group n= 231 and 0.5% in >60 months group n= 198 . An increase in the number of cases with rotavirus antigen-positivity was detected in winter and early spring seasons. No correlation was detected between adenovi rus antigen-positivity and seasons.Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that rotavi rus was a frequent cause of acute gastroenteritis in child ren in our region. Rotavirus which is the most common cause of gastroenteritis in children aged between 0-5 years should be investigated routinely, especially in the winter and early spring seasons
