Patient Safety Climate Perceptions of Healthcare Staff and Reporting of Medication Errors

Abstract

Purpose: Improving the culture of safety within health care is an essential component of preventing or reducing errors. Using the Safety Climate Survey, an organization can gain information about the safety perceptions of staffs and management’s commitment to safety. So; weak points of patient safety implementations can be detected. The study was planned in a public hospital to explore patient safety perceptions of staff.Materials and Methods: The safety climate survey submitted to healthcare staff. The questionnaire had 24 question and survey was scored on a 5-point Likert type scale. Results: The overall mean of the survey was 3.6, the safety climate mean was 3.4. The receiving appropriate feedback about performance had the lowest score: 2,8. ‘Briefing personnel before the start of a shift were common here’’ was the highest score:4,4. The 75.5% of staff believed that most adverse events occur as a result of multiple system failures, and were not attributable to one individual’s actions score:3,8 Encouragement of error reporting was found to be highly correlated wtih receiving appropriate feedback about performance and knowing the proper channels to direct questions regarding patient safety p
