Unexpected Acute Severe Anemia In a Jehova's Witness Patient After Peripheral Vascular Surgery: Treatment Challenges and Dilemmas
Abstract
The history of Jehovah’s Witnesses began more than a hundred years ago. Today the Watchtower Society has over 6 million active Jehovah’s Witnesses all around the world spreading its doctrines in 235 countries. Jehovah’s Witnesses refuse blood transfusions, which they consider a violation of God’s law even in “a life-or-death situation”. According to a report published in 2004, the total number of Jehovah’s Witnesses in our country whose population is 67 million and which consists of 32 communities, is 1784. In recent years, with technological developments and improvements in surgical experiences, surgical interventions especially cardiac are practised with a low risk to patients in societies who refuse blood transfusions such as Jehovah’s Witnesses. However, as in our case report, experiences and data about procedures that could be done in severe anemia which develops unexpectedly following peripheral vascular surgery are quite few. Therefore, in our case report, our experiences with our patient who was a Jehovah’s Witness with severe anemia following peripheral vascular surgery are mentioned

Yehova Şahidi Olan Hastada Vasküler Cerrahi Sonrası Beklenmedik Bir Şekilde Gelişen Ciddi Anemi: Tedavideki Zorluklar ve İkilemler
Abstract
Yehova Şahitlerinin tarihi yüzyıl öncesine dayanmaktadır. Bugün dünya çapında 6 milyona yakın inananı olan ve toplam 235 ülkede faaliyetlerini sürdüren Yehova Şahitleri dini inanışları Tanrının kurallarına karşı gelmek gereği kan ve kan ürünleri transfüzyonunu reddetmektedirler. 2004 yılında yayınlanan bir rapora göre, nüfusu 67 milyon olarak gösterilen ülkemizde 32 cemaatten oluşan Yehova Şahitlerinin toplam sayısının ise 1.784 olduğu belirtilmektedi. Son yıllarda sağlanan teknolojik ilerlemeler ve cerrahi deneyimlerdeki artış ile birlikte, Yehova Şahitleri gibi kan transfüzyonunu reddeden hastalarda özellikle kardiyak cerrahi girişimler kabul edilebilir bir risk ile yapılabilmektedir. Ancak, vaka sunumumuzda olduğu gibi periferik vasküler cerrahi sonrasında beklenmedik bir şekilde gelişen derin anemilerde yapılabilecekler ile ilgili deneyim ve veriler oldukça azdır. Bu nedenle vaka sunumumuzda periferik vasküler cerrahi sonrası derin anemi gelişen ve Yehova Şahidi olan hastamızdaki deneyimimizden bahsedilmiştir
