Abstract

Purpose: In this study, the knowledge and opinions of nursing and midwifery students about genetically modified organisms GMOs was investigated.Material and Method: Hundred and eighty-seven students participated in the study. The questionnaire used in the study was created by literature search on GMO. Data were analyzed using SPSS 15.0. Results: Of the students participated to research, 64.2% were from nursing and 35.8% were from midwifery and age of students was 20.63±1.53. 63.6% of the students defined GMOs as a food which is gene additive, 48.1% of the students defined GMOs as a food which was produced from hybrid seed, 72.2% of the students indicated that they hadn’t read any scientific publications about this issue, 81.3% of the students indicated that this subject was never touched upon in their lectures. 74.3% of the students found GMOs harmful for human health, and 74.9% of them found that GMOs were potentially carcinogenic. While 61.5% of the students believed that GMOs were harmful for nature, 59.4% of the students expressed that a change in flora was the reason of this. While 40.1% of the students thought that GMOs cause socio-economic problems in the World, 73.8% of them stated that farmers were the most affected group because of this situation. Conclusion: The research results show that nursing and midwifery students who are future health care professionals do not have enough knowledge about this issue. In this context, sensitivity of students to GMO must be increased. Therefore, informative lectures about GMO may be given in schools. In addition, informational events related to global health policies effecting health can be carried out
